Surestart Local Programme
What is the SureStart local programme?
The local SureStart programme aims to give all children the opportunity for the best start in life by making available appropriate support to help their:
- physical;
- social;
- emotional, and;
- educational development.
This is achieved by working with parents, carers and local communities to identify needs to plan and deliver services.
The services are friendly, easily accessible, sensitive to the needs of all our communities and offer ‘best value’. They emphasise early identification of needs, prevention and family support.
SureStart in Barnet covers the Underhill and West Hendon wards, and is available to families in these areas with children under 5 years old.
What services are available?
Services are focused around early years play, health support for children under 5 and their families, family support as well as outreach in the community:
- Parent and Toddler Groups;
- Bookstart;
- Adult Education;
- Health Visiting;
- Midwifery;
- Dental and Oral Health Advice;
- Speech and Language Therapy;
- Healthy Living and Dietary Advice;
- Psychology;
- Children’s Information Services;
- Welfare Rights Advice;
- Drop in - Creative Active Toddler Group;
- Family Support - Home Visiting.
Getting Involved
Parental participation and involvement is key to the programme; parents participate and are involved in the decision-making process.
Parental involvement takes the following form:
- Board Meetings;
- Partnership Boards;
- Subgroups;
- Service Panels – commissioning and reviewing of services;
- Parent/Carer Forums.
Partnership Working
SureStart Underhill and West Hendon works in partnership with libraries, local schools, children and family centres, the voluntary, private and statutory sector, such as Barnet council and Barnet Primary Care Trust.
These partners are represented on the SureStart Local Programme Board and are involved in the decision-making processes.
