Travel voucher scheme

Barnet Travel Scheme for disabled people.

This scheme allows Barnet residents with disabilities which prevent them from using buses or trains, to travel in local minicabs or taxicabs at reduced fares.

Are you eligible?

  • To be eligible you must either be unable to use buses, tubes or trains because of a permanent or long-term disability/injury which seriously affects your ability to walk or be registered blind or partially sighted. The scheme is not available to people who suffer from other disabilities or temporary disabilities such as a broken leg
  • People who have their own or regular access to private transport are unlikely to qualify for this scheme. However, exceptional circumstances will be taken into consideration
  • People who are registered blind or partially sighted will automatically be entitled to membership of the scheme with no effect on the use of their Freedom Pass on public transport.

What does it cost?

  • Each book costs £8.40.
  • Barnet Travel Scheme identity card holders are entitled to buy up to eight books per year of 15 x £1 vouchers.
  • If you have to use a fixed frame (non-folding) wheelchair you may buy up to ten books per year.

These can be used for any journey using participating minicab and taxicab companies. You do not have to purchase your entire year’s allowance at one time.You may buy one book at a time.

How does it work?

Before you wish to make a journey, phone one of the selected companies operating the scheme to book. The car will arrive to take you to your destination door to door. At the end of the journey you pay the driver with vouchers or vouchers and cash. You can use the scheme for any length of journey.

Contract

The companies/drivers are required to carry comprehensive insurance and the council cannot be held responsible in the event of an accident. The contract is between the user and the company/driver.

How do I apply for membership of the Barnet Travel Scheme for disabled people?

  • Complete the disabled travel scheme application form Help on Downloading PDFs (PDF:115KB)
  • Give your full name and address, and daytime telephone number. (It may be necessary to contact you about journeys you make under this scheme)
  • You must sign the declaration. If you are unable to complete and sign the application form yourself, ask someone else to do so for you.

Along with your completed application form, you will need to enclose:

  • two passport-type photographs (maximum size 2” x 1.5”) of yourself. Any two photographs will do so long as they are similar and are a reasonable likeness. (The easiest and cheapest way is from an automatic photo-booth). We will not reimburse the cost of the photographs
  • proof that you are normally resident in the London Borough of Barnet. This can be any letter addressed to you such as a gas or electricity bill or any official document bearing your name and address.

If your application is successful, an identity card will be sent to you by post together with full details of the scheme including how to buy your vouchers and telephone numbers of selected minicab/taxicab companies.
