Food Safety
The Food Safety Act 1990 aims to ensure that all food that is sold to the public is safe to eat and correctly described on the label.
Barnet Council's team of authorised Environmental Health Officers and Food Safety Officers, have the right to enter and inspect any food premises and any food found on that premises at all reasonable hours.
Our aim is to protect the public from any food-associated health risk.
Officers do not have to make appointments and will visit businesses on a programmed basis or as part of a complaint investigation.
The frequency of programmed inspections will depend largely on the potential food safety risks and how effectively those risks are controlled.
Some businesses are inspected once every six months while others are inspected less frequently, the inspecting officer will determine which frequency group each business falls in.
Officers are responsible for enforcing the law and as such will look for evidence to indicate that proprietors are complying with relevant food safety legislation.
