Food complaints
If you have a complaint about food then we would like to hear about it.
This may be about food which is of a poor quality, wrongly labelled or which may contain foreign bodies. We also investigate complaints about unhygienic premises or food handler practices or suspected food poisoning.
When a food complaint is made, the details of the complainant and details about the complaint will be taken. This will include what the complaint is about and the food premises that it relates to.
We can only investigate complaints about premises within the Borough or food sold within the Borough.
Complaints are categorised as high, medium or low risk to public health. Complaints in the first two categories will be investigated in full.
Where the complaint relates to food sold by responsible traders, such as most major supermarket chains and national manufacturers, and there is no significant risk to the public the complaint may be categorised as low risk.
In these cases you will normally be recommended to return the goods to the retailer. This permits resources to be focussed where greatest local improvement can be, and needs to be, effected.
Once the complaint has been fully investigated the officer will make a decision on the appropriate enforcement action to take. The complainant will be kept informed on the progress and conclusion of the complaint investigation.
We will not seek to obtain or otherwise negotiate any compensation or redress on behalf of the complainant. If you feel a claim is appropriate, you are recommended to seek legal advice as soon as possible.
