Help for adults

We aim to promote the independence of adults who need support, enabling them to live safely in their own homes where possible, and to encourage their participation in the community. More information about social care services, news and events can by found on the Adult Social Care and Health homepage

Who do we help?

We provide a range of services to people who have a:

We also provide support to carers.

Paying for services

If you come to Adult Social Care and Health for support, you will have a financial assessment to see if you should contribute towards the cost of your care. We will give you advice about this when you contact us. See our Fairer Contributions Policy 2011-12: Oct 2011 Help on Downloading PDFs (PDF:303KB)  for more details.

If you pay for your own services (whether or not the council help you to arrange them), it may be advisable for you to get independent financial advice to help you to meet the costs of your care in the future. See our information about paying for long term care.

Social Care Connect

This is an online resource that allows people who use social care services and the wider community to find out about services and activities in their area.

Social Care Connect allows users to search for a social care service or activity in the borough. Visitors to the website can also rate services, leave comments and discuss their experience of a service or activity with others.

Protecting vulnerable adults from abuse (Safeguarding Adults)

All local authorities have a duty to ensure that vulnerable adults, who are at risk of abuse, receive protection and support. If you, or another vulnerable adult you know is being harmed in any way by another person, please do not ignore it.

For information about what abuse is, who abuses and how to report it, you can visit our Safeguarding Adults page.

Deprivation of liberty safeguards

From 1 April 2009 the deprivation of liberty safeguards, which have been introduced into the Mental Capacity Act through the Mental Health Act 2007, came into force. These safeguards are there to protect people who have a mental health problem, learning disability or lack the capacity to give consent to arrangements made for their care from being unnecessarily deprived of their liberty.
