Safeguarding Adults Board

What is the Safeguarding Adults Board?

The Safeguarding Adults Board is a multi-agency board which has been established to improve safeguarding (protection) practices for vulnerable adults in Barnet. The board meets quarterly, and their work includes:

  • determining policy
  • co-ordinating activity between agencies
  • facilitating joint training
  • monitoring and reviewing progress in safeguarding practices
  • developing ways of working which will improve our ability to support Barnet residents across the community to live a life free from abuse
  • learning from lessons where people have not been adequately protected

The Safeguarding Adults Board is linked to other boards promoting the safety of residents such as Safer Communities Board, Hate Crime Forum and Domestic Violence Strategic Board.

The Multi-Agency Safeguarding Adults Policy and Procedures: April 2009 Help on Downloading PDFs (PDF: 4.4MB) set out the local code of practice for the London Borough of Barnet, which has been approved and endorsed by all member organisations of the Safeguarding Adults Board.

The Safeguarding Adults Board produces an annual report on its activities and reports to the Barnet Council Adult Strategy Group, the Overview and Scrutiny Committee and the Cabinet. A Safeguarding Adults service user forum has also been established to ensure the views of service users and carers are taken into account in the work of the Board helping to improve services for Barnet residents. This group helped to develop the public information booklet Safeguarding Adults from Abuse in Barnet Help on Downloading PDFs (PDF: 861KB).

Sub groups of the Safeguarding Adults Board

The Safeguarding Adults Board has five sub groups, each chaired by a member of the Board. These have been established to deliver on the board’s work plan. They are:

  • The Performance and Audit group - As the Safeguarding Partnership Board is responsible for ensuring that National Policy and guidance is being adhered to locally, this subgroup has been set up to develop a local policy for the purposes of Audit and Quality Assurance to ensure that a consistent approach is maintained across all partner organisations.
  • The Training Group - The aim of this group is to ensure that we have a skilled workforce to help protect vulnerable people and that there is awareness across the community, public, independent and voluntary sectors about what constitutes safeguarding and what to do if abuse is suspected. Details of training can be found on the Safeguarding Training page
  • The working with Providers Group - This sub-group has been established to strengthen the way that Adult Social Services and Health work in partnership with its providers on safeguarding issues. The subgroup has representation from Adult Social Services, Barnet NHS, Care Quality Commission and Provider organisations. The sub-group also discusses provider training needs in relation to safeguarding.
  • The Joint working Group - This sub-group has been set up to improve joint working between all local bodies that have a safeguarding responsibility, to strengthen safeguarding practice.
  • The Communications Group - The aim of this group is to review and develop information for staff and public information about safeguarding issues. This group aims to improve awareness across the diverse community and to organise campaigns on safeguarding.
