Bird flu
Bird Flu – the facts
Avian influenza, or bird flu, has now been identified in most of western Europe including the UK.
Barnet Council is working very closely with Barnet Primary Care Trust and following the advice of the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in drawing up contingency plans and disseminating information to the public.
Residents should visit the DEFRA website for a full and detailed explanation of bird flu and the surrounding issues, but should remember the following key facts and points of guidance:
- Bird flu is a disease of birds and there have been relatively very few cases of the virus being passed to humans. And in those cases, infection has resulted from very close contact with birds;
- Keepers of poultry are advised to be vigilant and keep high levels of bio-security.
The Defra website can also provide the latest updated information on what types of dead bird findings should be reported and the procedures that need to be followed. Alternatively, the Defra helpline can be reached by calling 08459 335577, between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
If any members of the public handle dead birds, it is important they:
- wash their hands with soap and water, as soon as possible
- should avoid touching their face; and certainly
- should not eat until they have washed their hands
- Any soiling on clothing should be cleaned with soap and water.
In the event of an outbreak of bird flu, Barnet Council would play a key part in the local response.
Council staff will play an important role in the enforcement and implementation of disease control strategies and will be fundamental to rapid and efficient access to local information and resources. In addition, they will provide advice and education at a local level.
