Age Concern Barnet

Age Concern Barnet provides services for all older people in Barnet. They promote the views of older people and help them to remain independent. They provide information on a wide variety of topics relevant to older people and also run two day centres, a health promotion scheme and a Handyperson scheme.

The Alzheimer's society is a care and research charity for people with all forms of dementia. They provide information and education, and support for carers.

This forum aims to give older people an active voice in stating their needs and concerns on a variety of local isues.

Barnet Carers Centre

Barnet Carers Centre provides a wide range of services including advice, information, practical and emotional support to unpaid carers of people who are physically or mentally ill, frail or disabled. The centre offers drop-in facilities, a telephone helpline, welfare benefits surgeries, a former carers group, relaxation days and evenings, a carer respite fund and a counselling service.

Barnet Multicultural Community Centre

The Barnet Multicultural Community Centre (BMCC) comprises of three independent community groups, the Barnet Asian Old People's Association (BAOPA), the Barnet African Caribbean Association (BACA) and Barnet Somali Community Group (BSCG). The centre aims to promote and develop opportunities for and participation of disadvantaged people, and to work towards a better understanding between different cultural groups.

Disability Action in the Borough of Barnet (DabB)

DabB provides a range of accessible services for disabled people including information, advice and advocacy on topics such as access, welfare rights, housing, debt and equipment. DabB's Independent Living Agency can help find personal assistants for those in need. The Active Volunteering Project can help you find volunteering opportunities.

Friend In Need (FIN)

FIN provide a range of services for older people and their carers living in the New and East Barnet areas. They also have a shopping scheme covering all of Barnet.

Friends of the Sick - Chevrat Bikkur Cholim

Friends of the sick are a Jewish charity working mainly in North West London. They provide carers to people who are incapacitated because of ill health, old age or accident. Most of their clients are elderly members of the Jewish Community who find they cannot cope on their own. Carers are not licensed to provide personal care but still fulfill a vital function for many of the elderly clients, who feel more comfortable with someone familiar with Jewish practice.

MIND offer support to people who have experienced problems with their mental health. they offer advocacy, long-term outreach and befriending, counselling, activities at the day centre and an information and advice service. There is a range of volunteering opportunities available.

Advocacy in Barnet

This is a service for people who use health and social care services. Advocacy is taking action to support people to say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests and get the services they need. Paid and volunteer advocates provide local residents with access to independent information, support and representation. Advocacy in Barnet also provides training and opportunities to people who would like to become advocates.

Barnet Citizens Advice Bureaux

Citizens Advice Bureaux offer free, impartial and confidential advice on a range of issues including welfare rights and housing. They have specialist workers who advise on both debt management and benefit problems.

Care Quality Commission (CQC)

On 1 April 2009, the Care Quality Commission replaced the Commission for Social Care Inspection as the regulatory body which inspects and reports on care services and councils. The Care Quality Commission provide information about care services available in your area. You can get advice about how to decide what the right service is for you, and what to look for when choosing a care service.

Threshold Housing Advice Centre

The Threshold Housing Advice Barnet Centre gives advice on housing law, helping the single homeless, helping council tenants, Housing Benefit and homelessness appeals.

The centre is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and will only see clients who have an appointment.
