What is the Considerate Contractors Scheme?
The Considerate Contractor Scheme is an initiative open to all contractors undertaking building work within the London Borough of Barnet.
There is no membership fee, but on joining the scheme, members agree to abide by the Code of Good Practice and display signs provided by the council at the contractor’s expense. It is by following this voluntary code that the general standards of work are raised and the condition and safety of the borough streets and pavements improved for the benefit of everyone living, working or visiting the borough.
The scheme is managed by the council and judged annually by elected members, council staff, and industry advisers. Annual award ceremony takes place each January at which those companies and individuals that have attained and exceed the required standards of the scheme are presented with certificates by the Mayor of Barnet.
How the scheme works
Membership of the scheme
Contractors are invited to join the Considerate Contractor Scheme. All that is required is the completion of a simple application form. There is no membership fee although the site signs are charged for.
On joining the scheme members undertake to abide by the Code of Good Practice and display the scheme site signs and stickers on the site adjacent to the public highway.
Identification of works
A clear identification of the responsible contractor is required on each site, together with a clear indication of membership of the scheme. Signage for the site is supplied by the council.
Monitoring of works
Works are monitored by the council. Standards are compared to the requirements of the Code of Good Practice, and records are kept.

Awards
Awards are annual, and take place during January. Sites are judged on the basis of their overall performance during the preceding period.
There are three categories:
Gold Award
Members whose works exceed the requirements of the Code of Good Practice.
Silver Award
Members whose works meet the requirements of the Code of Good Practice.
Bronze Award
Members whose works do not meet all of the requirements but are considered to be worthy of an award.
At the judging panel’s discretion a “Special Gold Award” may be presented to the year’s most outstanding site.
Code of Good Practice
It is by following this voluntary code that the general standards of work are raised.
As a participating member of the Considerate Contractor Scheme, we undertake, in addition to legal obligations, to ensure that site personnel are educated to observe the following points of considerate conduct.
We also undertake to correct any statutory infringements or breaches in the Code of Good Practice, and understand that continual justifiable complaints by the public or the council will lead to expulsion from the scheme.
Care
All work will be carried out safely and in such a way that it will not inconvenience pedestrians or other road users, Special care will be taken to make sure that pedestrians with sight, hearing or mobility difficulties are not inconvenienced or endangered and that access is maintained for those in wheelchairs or pushing prams.
Clean
Footways and carriageways affected by works are to be kept in a tidy and safe condition. Hoardings, scaffolds, warning lights and other features are to be kept clean and neat.
Considerate
As far as reasonable, works are to be carried out in such a way that noise and dust are kept to a minimum, and at times which will minimise the effect on residents, workers and visitors.
Co-operative
The main contractor is to ensure that sub-contractors, suppliers and others working on, or near the site, maintain the standards of the Code of Practice.
