Local plan - waste
The North London Waste Plan
Latest: waste plan consultation: 14 October - 24 November 2009
The North London Waste Plan will contain a list of sites that have been selected as suitable for waste management. It will also contain policies guiding developers of waste management facilities ensuring that each one is functional and fits in well with its surrounding environment. We want to see waste management facilities that are well designed, well located and good neighbours that create new job opportunities for green industries.
Seven North London local authorities (Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest) are working together to create the North London Waste Plan.
The North London Waste Plan will implement London Plan (consolidated with alterations since 2004) (the Mayors plan for London) policy which identifies the seven North London Boroughs as needing to provide 28.4 hectares (1 hectare is 1,000 square metres) of land to be used for waste management.
Once the North London Waste Plan is adopted, it will become a development plan document (DPD) forming an important part of Barnet's Local Development Framework - the planning strategy for the whole borough.
Types of waste management facilities
A waste management facility deals with the waste produced by residents and businesses. There are many types of facility, some examples are listed below:
Waste Transfer Facility
Waste is brought into the facility on small vehicles and then loaded on to larger trucks or trains for transport to another facilty for sorting, lanfill or other processing.
Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)
This is a site where recyclable material (waste from your recycling bins) collected from residents and businesses is sorted and treated before being transferred to another facility for reuse.
Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) also known as a Civic Amenity Centre
These are sites where members of the public can dispose of household waste. An example is the existing Civic Amenity Site at Summers Lane.

Putting the North London Waste Plan together
Before the Waste Plan can be formally adopted it has to go through three stages of consultation, giving you the public, a chance to have your say about the strategy. The first stage of consultation 'Issues and Options' took place in 2008. The three stages of consultation are:
- Issues and options
(PDF 3.2 MB) (external link) - 23 January - 4 March 2008 - Consultation: Preferred Options - 14 October - 24 November 2009
- Examination in public - June 2011, then 'Adoption' in December 2011
Have your say consultation: 14 October - 24 November 2009
We are now consulting on the Preferred Options stage of putting the plan together. You can play an active part in the process by attending one of the drop-in sessions that have been organised and by submitting your comments.
