When to apply
When is a Planning Application required?
Permission is often needed under planning legislation for new developments such as:
- the erection of new buildings,
- extensions to existing buildings,
- changes of use of land or buildings,
- advertisement signs and hoardings,
- the demolition of buildings,
- changes affecting Listed Buildings and buildings in a Conservation Area,
- vehicle crossovers (driveways),
- the installation of satellite dishes and radio masts, and
- works to certain trees.
Visit the Planning FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) for answers to these subjects.
Permission may also be required from the Council’s Building Control service.
Planning Applications are dealt with by one of 3 Area Teams, according to the ward in which they are located.
