Sheltered and supported housing
We provide a range of housing for older people including:
- sheltered housing with a resident sheltered housing officer
- sheltered housing with a visiting sheltered housing officer
- accommodation that is suitable for older people and linked to a central alarm.
There are 1547 rented sheltered housing flats in the London Borough of Barnet of which nearly 500 are owned by the council (managed by Barnet Homes) and around 1000 are owned and managed by housing associations/charities or trusts.
Older people who are in most need of support are considered first when bidding for sheltered housing. (More about bidding for properties can be found on the Home connections site ). We therefore assess the support needs for applicants over 60 and give priority to those in most need.
Over the last five years we have improved much of our sheltered housing - our aim is to provide high quality housing for older people and to provide residents with the support that they need to live independently.
Extra care
‘Extra care’ is a new type of housing we are developing for older people who have higher support needs but still want and are able to live in a self-contained flat. In some cases existing buildings are being refurbished with better facilities such as walk-in showers, a laundry for residents, lounges, meeting rooms, hobby rooms as well as space for health or care staff. Support and care is usually available 24 hours a day.
Older black and minority ethnic people
We are working with specialist providers of housing for older people to establish the needs and wishes of older people from minority ethnic groups such as Irish, Jewish and Chinese to further improve our existing sheltered and new extra care housing.
