Listed buildings
These are structures of special architectural or historic interest, which need to be preserved for future generations.
There are currently 2155 buildings listed within The London Borough of Barnet. If a building is listed, consent may be required prior to making alterations to it, internally or externally. To discuss making alterations to these buildings, please contact the Urban Design and Conservation Team, in the first instance.
Statutory (nationally) listed buildings are regulated by legislation. English Heritage gives advice to local authorities on certain categories of application for planning permission and listed building consent.

Applying for permission
Applications for Listed Building Consent are made in a similar fashion

(PDF 243KB).
Please also view our guideline notes
(PDF 45 KB).
If you also need planning permission for your intended proposal then the two applications can be submitted together. There is no fee for the Listed Building Consent application. You can also apply for permission using the Planning Portal
Scheduled Monument Consent
The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 provides for nationally important archaeological sites to be statutorily protected as Scheduled Ancient Monuments.
The scheduling of a monument means that permission - 'Scheduled Monument Consent' (SMC) - is required for works affecting that monument.
