Pocket histories

Archives - Pocket Histories

These short histories are written for school children of all ages, but will be of interest to anyone who is interested in the fascinating story of our borough.  Starting with the Hendon area, the Pocket Histories will build up to cover nearly every corner of the borough down to the smallest recognisable district, such as Parson Street in Hendon, Red Lion Hill in Finchley, and Underhill in Barnet, each accompanied with a picture and links to historical maps.  There are specialist topics including: The Battle of Barnet, Hendon Aerodrome, and La Delivrance (the Naked Lady), and many more, as well as population statistics drawn from the census since 1801.

If you are a Barnet resident, they are the histories of the place where you live.

Pocket Histories describe:

  • General changes which have occurred to the area and why
  • Buildings and institutions of interest
  • Famous events and people.

Pocket Histories are divided into five areas:

Each area has its own special links pages with more detailed histories, picture and film libraries, online historical directories, and local history groups.
