Children's library service

Bookstart babies readingBarnet libraries welcome children from birth onwards – even babies can join!  

To become a member you will just need to complete a short form (signed by parents/ carers for children under 16 years old) and show us one form of identification featuring your address.


In each library you will find:

  • Lots of special board books and picture books to share as well as books for children just beginning to read alone
  • Giant picture books, large print stories and books in many different languages
  • Books and information about your hobbies or to help with your homework
  • Stories to suit all tastes and ages
  • Free access to computers and the best websites for children and young people
  • Story tapes for all ages as well as videos, DVDs and Playstation games (in selected libraries)
  • Materials and activities for young adults and teenagers.
  • Materials to help parents and carers.
  • a wide range of events and activities including homework clubs, rhyme time, toddler read and rhyme, story explorers holiday workshops reading groups and storytelling sesions

The library service also participates in the national Bookstart programme which encourages families to share books with their young children and runs activities for under fives in all of Barnet's Children's Centres.
