Bookstart is the first national book-gifting scheme in the world. Library staff, health visitors and other partners work together to bring the gift of books to babies born in the UK. Every child is entitled to two FREE age appropriate Bookstart packs.
At seven to nine months old
Baby Bookstart bag
When your child is about 7 months old your health visitor will give you a Baby Bookstart bag containing 2 free books and lots of information about reading with babies.
Singing songs and rhymes with babies is great fun and encourages development of communication, language and early literacy skills, so come along to one of our baby rhyme time sessions where one of our special puppets will help you learn the rhymes and actions.

At three years old
Bookstart Treasure Box
When your child reaches three years old you are entitled to another Bookstart pack. Bookstart treasure boxes or vouchers are usually distributed via your child's pre-school or nursery class. Vouchers can be redeemed for a treasure box at any Barnet library..
Activities for under fives
Barnet Libraries runs a full range of age appropriate activities for under fives in libraries and children's centres aound the borough. All sessions aim to support child development particularly in relation to communication, language and literacy.
Baby rhyme times are for under ones and non walking babies. These sessions are great fun and combine baby rhymes with actions and an early introduction to board books.
Toddler read and rhyme is a session for confident walkers and older toddlers. Toddler read and rhyme involves more physical movement to keep your child focussed. The sessions also involve some simple stories, introducing the concept of listening and concentration.
Story explorers is an interactive story session for older toddlers and pre-schoolers. Sessions typically involve stories, rhymes alongside craft and play activities designed to enhance your childs learning and to help prepare children for school and nursery.
