eBooks and audio books to download and borrow for free

You can...

  • access nearly 2,500 fiction and non-fiction titles.
  • use our new digital library service for free. All you need to use this service is your Barnet Library Card and pin number. Not a library member?
  • download to your PC or Mac, or you can transfer titles to your iPod, MP3, Sony Reader or other portable device including the iPhone and iPad.
  • borrow up to ten items for one, two or three weeks.

Our collection of titles can be browsed through either the library catalogue or our digital library catalogue (collections). You will need to download titles on to your own device as this service is intended for home use only.

Since the launch in February 2010 more than 10,000 e-audio books and eBooks have been borrowed - try it for yourself.

The 24/7 reference library gives you access to:

  • over 300 major encyclopaedias and reference books from major publisherslady with laptop
  • the back files of 90 national and regional newspapers
  • Theory Test Pro – to help you prepare for your driving theory test.
  • Life in the UK - to help you prepare for the British Citizenship test.

Transparent language online (Byki)

Have you ever felt like learning a new language? Barnet libraries can help you with the new online learning course, Transparent language online (Byki), available free to library members.

The course takes users through a series of simple steps to memorise words and phrases in a new language, including their meanings and correct pronunciation.

With resources to help users learn over 80 languages, the Transparent language online system can be accessed from inside or outside the library, via the web browser on Windows and Mac computers and on smartphones via the free Apple and Android apps. Users will have a variety of high quality learning options that build listening, reading, speaking and writing skills.

In addition to Transparent language online's advanced learning tools, users will have access to an array of online language and cultural resources including one-click access to Facebook and Twitter language communities as well as blogs which feature a collection of articles covering the language and the culture that surrounds it. The system is designed to be very easy to use.

How do I get started?

On your first visit choose 'sign up with barcode or user ID' and enter your Barnet library ticket number (with no spaces). You will need to create a username and password in order to access the site again. Once you have registered whatch the instructions and start learning!
