Public WiFi
Wireless Internet access is now available in several Barnet libraries. If you have a wireless enabled laptop you can now use it in the library to get a free Internet connection:
- the service is currently available at Burnt Oak, Chipping Barnet, Church End, East Barnet, Edgware, Golders Green, Hendon, Mill Hill and North Finchley libraries
- you must be a library member
- use your library card number and library password to login
- access is free to library members
- you can use the service for an hour at a time - there is a short break before you can login again
- the standard Library Internet Acceptable Usage Policy applies.
South Friern library will also have free public WiFi when it reopens after refurbishment and rebuilding.
Tips for using the public WiFi:
- you will need a wireless enabled laptop using the 802.11a/b/g standard
- the WiFi hotspot is called Barnet Libraries Public WiFi or Hendonlibrary - these should appear in your list of WiFi services
- once you have connected to the hotspot please restart your browser to see the login page 'Barnet Libraries Wireless Internet Access'
- enter your library card number and library password into the Library Number and Password boxes
- you will need to agree to the Terms and Conditions. You can view them from the Terms and Conditions link.
- check the 'I agree to the Terms and Conditions' box and then choose Login
- if your login is successful you will see a small pop-up window headed Your Session
- your browser should open your home page.
- sessions are for 60 minutes. You can login again after a 15 minute break. Your session will timeout if it is inactive for too long.
- when you have finished you can logout from the Your Session window and disconnect in your Wireless network settings.
Troubleshooting
- you may need to adjust your browser Connections settings so that proxy settings, IP address and DNS are assigned automatically
- if your login fails, check that the wireless signal is not too weak. If it is try moving to another part of the building
- try restarting your laptop and your browser if you still cannot connect.
- if you cannot login there may be a problem with your library account. The WiFi system uses the same details as you would use to login to a library PC so you can check on a library PC or by asking staff.
- if your home page doesn't show after you have logged in, try restarting your browser. You won't need to logout you will still be connected.
- ask library staff for a copy of the helpsheet 'How to use Barnet Libraries wifi'
- if you are not already a library member you can join if you 'Live, work or study' in the London Borough of Barnet. Simply complete a membership form in the library or visit the library membership form webpage
- if you are a library member but don't have a library password please ask the staff in your local library to set one up for you.
