Montclair in detail
During World War II, many British children, including residents of the old Borough of Finchley were evacuated to Montclair, New Jersey, in the United States of America. After the war, Montclair exchanged books with the localities from which the children had been evacuated. The Finchley Atlantic Fellowship was formed. This made a connection in April 1945. The relationship between the two towns dwindled in the late 50s but was rekindled during a series of events in the 1960s.
The first meeting of the Friends of the London Borough of Barnet took place in Montclair in July 1983. Shortly afterwards in Barnet the Friends of Montclair group was formed. The Friends of Montclair have a rolling programme whereby an exchange for children in school Years 11 to 13 takes place annually.
Montclair is situated in the centre of the North Western Essex County in the State of New Jersey. The area was first settled in 1694 by English and Dutch farmers. The township was formed in 1868 by the joining of Speertown and Crane Town. In 1894 it was properly incorporated as a town.
Montclair has a population of 37,487, of which 5,720 are elderly. The area of Montclair is 6.16 square miles which is mainly residential, and 98% of the land is developed. 47% of the population have executive, administrative, managerial and professional occupations, with 5.4% of the residents unemployed.
Although only 12 miles from New York, Montclair does not appear to be particularly urban. It has many large "New England"-type houses and for years was the place busy New Yorkers came for their weekend retreats.
The members of the Friends of Barnet are among the most kind and generous people any of the English visitors there have ever met.
The members of the Council including the Mayor are elected for four years.
Montclair is also twinned with Cherepontes (Russia), Graz (Austria) and Pearly Lagoon (Nicaragua).
