Maintenance programme structural surveys
We are the highway authority for the borough, which means that we are responsible for repairing and maintaining a number of roads.
On an annual basis, we produce a programme of planned maintenance which is broken down between roads and footways for each of the three constituencies that make up the borough:
- Chipping Barnet
- Finchley and Golders Green
- Hendon
These programmes are approved by the three corresponding Area Environment Sub-Committees in advance of each financial year commencing in April and they are published online in the Committee Papers Library.
The condition of roads is measured and determined by surveys carried out by independent consultants and visual inspections and is measured against a number of national standards under the following National Indicators (NI's), which we are required to publish annually:
- principal roads - NI168
- classified non-principal roads - NI169
Carriageways and footways are inspected following information from various sources, including surveys carried out by independent consultants, reports received from residents, councillors, MPs and road users in addition to police observations and accident data.
