Parking place suspensions
Parking places can be suspended in certain circumstances, for example for:
- removals
- building works
- utility works
- special events
- funerals.
Suspending a parking place prohibits people from parking in it. If you need to park a specific vehicle to carry out a removal, please ensure you tell us using the contact details opposite. If you request a parking suspension for the purpose of building works, vehicles may only park within the suspension parking place whilst loading/unloading materials and must not park all day.
Suspensions are indicated by advance warning notices put up before the suspension starts, and "no-waiting" cones placed during the night before the suspension starts.
We will attempt to send our Civil Enforcement Officer (formerly known as. parking attendants) to the location of the suspension to try and ensure that the parking spaces are kept clear, but we cannot guarantee that people will not park illegally (though if they do they will be penalised by issue of a penalty charge notice). The council is unable to clamp or remove the vehicle and the charges will still apply.
To apply for a parking suspension we require at least five working days notice. You must complete an application form or send your written request via email, fax or post, stating the location, reason, date(s), number of parking spaces and your contact details. Once your request is received you should receive a response from us within two working days.

As of 1 January 2008 the charges for parking suspensions will be: there is an initial charge of £60 per parking place and an additional daily rate of £5 per parking space (a 5 metre length), per day. A parking place consists of any amount of parking spaces in a row. The daily rate per space is in addition to the £60 initial charge. For example, three spaces suspended for two days would cost £60+(£5 x 3) x2 = £90.
Please note: We require payment in advance of the suspension being carried out. If payment cannot be provided prior to the suspension we require a purchase order number, with payment being provided shortly afterwards.
There is no charge for parking suspensions requested for funerals.
If two separate parking spaces are suspended on the same day, two initial charges of £60 are payable even if the parking places are in the same street.
