Gritting

Back to main highlights

London Resiliance Network

As we continue to experience severe weather conditions, conserving grit becomes ever more important. Our priority has to be to keep the very major routes open so that public transport is able to keep running.

Please note that the GIS (geographical information system) maps require a 3.6MB download, but only need to be installed once. The GIS maps are compatible with most versions of Internet Explorer only. They are not configured for Mozilla-based browsers like Firefox and Safari.

Our winter maintenance programme

We have a formal winter maintenance programme which ensures that the boroughs roads, footways and town centres remain clear and free flowing during winter months.

This policy is updated on an annual basis to maximise the impact that gritting has across the borough.Gritting forms a large part of the winter maintenance programme and we currently have nine large gritting vehicles and four manually operated footway gritting machines. These teams and vehicles are tasked with laying grit salt across the borough and work on a priority basis.

Using community 'grit bins'

A Barnet Council grit bin on the pavement covered in snow. There are 280 yellow ‘grit bins’ located around the borough. Our gritting crews carry out hand-gritting during extreme weather. Residents can use these grit bins on pavements and other public footways (not private driveways). Use a spade or shovel to spread the grit thinly and evenly across the pavement.

Report a problem

If you a query or problem concerning gritting, report this online using Barnet's FixMyStreet. Make a note of the exact location and give as many details about the problem as you can.
