Roads and highways - maintenance programme structural surveys
Barnet Council is the highway authority for the borough. This means we are responsible for maintaining the road network.
The council produces an annual planned maintenance programme for each of the three constituency areas: Chipping Barnet, Finchley & Golders Green and Hendon.
These maintenance programmes are approved quarterly by the three corresponding Area Environment Sub-Committees and published online
Maintenance programmes are split into carriageway and footway schemes.
Condition of roads is determined through:
- surveys carried out by independent consultants
- visual inspection
The condition of the road network is measured against national standards under the following Best Value Performance Indicators (BVPIs), which the council is required to publish annually:
BVPI 223 Principal Roads
BVPI 224a Classified Non Principal Roads
BVPI 224b Unclassified Roads
BVPI 187 Footways Cat 1 & 2
Carriageways and footways are can be inspected following information from various sources, including:
- Results of surveys carried out by independent consultants
- Reports from residents, councillors, MPs and road users
- Police observations and accident data
