Supported housing choices
There may be a time when you find you can no longer manage to look after yourself at home.
Many people are able to get support from friends or relatives, and there is a range of care and support available to help you remain in your own home. Visit our support at home section for more information.
If you are still finding it difficult to manage, you may want to consider other housing options which can provide visiting support or support on site. If you are an older person, these could include moving to a sheltered housing scheme, or into extra care housing.
For everyone else, Barnet has a range of supported housing services in the borough. Some are shared houses and some are blocks of self-contained flats. In some cases, support workers will visit all the residents, and others have support staff based on site depending on the level of need of the residents.
Most modern supported housing benefits from Telecare alarms and equipment to help people to stay independent.
Overnight support is provided to some buildings where residents need it. This support can either be provided by waking staff members (forpeople who routinely require care overnight), or by a member of staff sleeping in, who can respond in the event of an emergency.
Supported housing is often helpful to people who might otherwise find it difficult to manage their independent living arrangements, especially if it is the first time they have lived on their own or if they have experienced a period of ill-health, time in hospital, or in residential care.
Supported housing can provide settled accommodation in the long term or can be used as a step towards independence for people in recovery or who require linked care and support services for a short period of time, before moving on to their own accommodation in the future.
Access to supported housing generally follows an needs assessment by Barnet Council. Most of the time, Supported housing services provide housing with support for people with learning disabilities, people with mental health problems and people with long-term conditions.
Barnet has recently undertaken a procurement of supported housing services for these groups. The following providers have been appointed to Barnet’s framework and many have services available in borough.
