Nationality checking service

The nationality checking service is a partnership between the UK Border Agency and the Barnet Registration and Nationality Service.

The aim of the nationality checking service is to help reduce unnecessary delays in the process of applying for British citizenship. This is not a fast track service but applications that are accurate and complete tend to be handled quickly and without further enquiries from the Home Office.

Our service will ensure that application forms are filled in correctly. We also ensure that important documents, which need to accompany the application form, are checked, copied and certified so that, in most instances applicants can keep the originals. The application will be sent to the Home Office by special delivery post.

Applications

Application forms are available from the Home Office or by contacting the UK Border Agency Nationality Contact Centre on 0845 010 5200.

We recommend that you read the Home Office guidance notes and ensure you have all correct documentation to support your application. You can access the guidance notes from the Home Office.

Appointments

The nationality checking service is available by appointment only. Children under 18 years of age do not need to be present. If you make a joint adult application both applicants must attend the appointment. 

Appointments are available Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm at:

• Hendon Town Hall, The Burroughs, Hendon, London,  NW4 4BG
• Barnet Register Office, 182 Burnt Oak Broadway, Edgware, London, HA8 0AU.

• you will be charged a non-refundable administrative fee to reflect the cost of providing the service. This is in addition to the application fee charged by the UK Border Agency
• you can reschedule your appointment. This must be done 48 hours in advance or you will be required to pay again. If you need to cancel your appointment this must be done seven days before your appointment. If the appointment is not cancelled seven days in advance, the fee you have paid will not be refunded.
