HM The Queen's Diamond Jubilee – June 2012

February 2012 marks the 60th anniversary of the accession of HM Queen Elizabeth II to the throne. Her Majesty is only the second monarch to have reached this landmark.

To commemorate this momentous event, preparations are being made across the country to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, focusing on the first weekend in June 2012. A Diamond Jubilee bank holiday has been announced for Tuesday 5 June, resulting in a four-day weekend.

National celebrations include a royal boat pageant along the River Thames, a series of visits by the Queen across the country, a concert at Buckingham Palace and a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Plans are already underway in Barnet to mark the occasion, and residents will be able to find the latest on preparations here over the coming months up to June 2012. Plans include:

  • A Black Poplar tree (HM The Queen’s favourite) to be planted towards the end of 2011 in Sunny Hill Park, Hendon
  • A ‘Civic Service’ attended by the Mayor of Barnet on Sunday 5 February 2012 to mark the accession of the Queen to the throne, to be held at Golders Green Parish Church
  • A Family Fun Day at Golders Hill Park on Monday 4 June 2012 culminating in the lighting of a beacon as part of the national Diamond Jubilee Beacons scheme
  • A tree planting scheme to be offered to schools across the borough, with one Black Mulberry tree offered to each school
  • A range of other commemorative activity, including co-ordinated bell ringing, musical and choral performances are being prepared, while residents will be encouraged to organise street parties for the occasion.
  • There are also plans to organise a Diamond Jubilee Volunteering Scheme. More details will be made available on this website in the coming months.
