Listed buildings

These are structures of significant local and national interest, which need to be preserved for future generations.

There are currently 2155 buildings listed within The London Borough of Barnet. If a building is listed permission may be required prior to making alterations to it.

Statutory (nationally) listed buildings are regulated by legislation and determined by English Heritage which governs any changes that can be made.

Please also view our guideline notes Help on Downloading PDFs (PDF 45 KB) (External Link)

If you also need planning permission for your intended proposal then the two applications can be submitted together. There is no fee for the Listed Building Consent application. You can also apply for permission using the Planning Portal

Scheduled Monument Consent

The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 provides for nationally important archaeological sites to be statutorily protected as Scheduled Ancient Monuments.

The scheduling of a monument means that permission - 'Scheduled Monument Consent' (SMC) - is required for works affecting that monument.
