Mental Health services for older adults

Specialist Mental Health social workers for older adults in Barnet are based at Edgware Community Hospital and Barnet General Hospital. The Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) support and treat adults over 65 years who have mental health problems that cannot be adequately treated otherwise. This includes people with depression, anxiety, psychoses or dementia. Within the CMHTs, professionals of several disciplines, all specialising in Mental Health work closely together to assess mental health needs and associated risks. They also consult with clients and carers to put appropriate care plans in place.

At present most referrals to the CMHTs are made via GPs. If you or your family or friends feel you need specialist help, please speak to your GP first to request a referral.

If you have a general question about the service, contact the Older Adults Mental Health Services based at Westgate House, Edgware Community Hospital:

The Mental Health Act

Under Section 3 of the Mental Health Act 1983, it is possible for someone with a mental illness to be detained in hospital for up to six months treatment. This could be for their own health and safety, or to protect other people. Under Section 29 of the same Act, the person's nearest relative can be 'displaced' if they do not agree with the decision to detain their relative in hospital.

Mental Capacity

Some people with mental health problems may lack the capacity to make certain decisions for themselves. The Mental Capacity Act 2005 protects people in this situation by setting out who can take decisions for them and in which circumstances.

From 1 April 2009 the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, which have been introduced into the Mental Capacity Act through the Mental Health Act 2007, come into force. These safeguards are to protect people who have a mental health problem, learning disability or lack the capacity to give consent to arrangements made for their care from being unnecessarily deprived of their liberty.
