Council names Barnet’s 48th Mayor Designate

Councillor Brian Schama was last night (6 March 2012) elected the 48th Mayor Designate of the borough following a full meeting of the council at Hendon Town Hall.

His wife Lynda will be his Consort and his Deputy Mayor will be Councillor Kate Salinger, supported by her Husband, Councillor Brian Salinger.

Councillor Schama was nominated by Councillor John Marshall and seconded by Councillor Sury Khatri at the meeting. No other nominations were put forward.

Councillor Schama has represented the Mill Hill Ward since his election to Barnet Council in May 2010.

Born in Golders Green, Councillor Schama has been married to his wife Lynda for 38 years and has two sons.

Councillor Schama currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the Audit Committee, Chairman of the Task and Finish Group (procurement) and Chairman of the Hendon Area Environment Sub Committee, as well as Director of the Barnet Group Board.

He is also a member of the Budget and Performance Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Press Support Group and the Corporate Parenting Advisory Panel.

Rabbi Shochet of Mill Hill United Synagogue has been appointed his chaplain.

Councillor Schama will take up his post after the annual meeting of the council in May when the current Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Lisa Rutter, steps down.

The Mayor Designate, Councillor Schama said:

“I’m honoured to be appointed Mayor Designate for the next Mayoral year. I shall take my responsibilities seriously and devote all the time and attention the role deserves.

“During the Olympic and Queen’s Jubilee year I look forward to showcasing all that Barnet has to offer and meeting as many residents as possible from all walks of life across the borough.”
