Chefs of the future get off to a frying start

Published Wednesday 14 March 2012

A cooking course which gives young people a taster of what it’s like to work in a professional kitchen has been launched by Barnet Council.

The ten week ‘Kitchen basics’ programme at Canada Villa Youth Activity Centre, Mill Hill, introduces budding chefs to food preparation skills and techniques, giving them the confidence to continue cooking outside of the classroom.

Targeted towards those who are currently not in full-time education or work, the programme helps those interested in pursuing a career in the food and catering industry by teaching the importance of working as a team, how and where ingredients are grown as well as industry health and safety laws and practices.

Each session is led by a trained tutor in a professionally equipped kitchen, reproducing a similar environment to that of some of London’s top restaurants.

The programme culminates in a ‘showcase’ event where local industry partners and businesses are invited to sample a range of dishes prepared by the young people, providing an opportunity to gain further work placements or employment.

The planning, marketing and preparation for the event will be organised by the young people themselves, allocating roles and responsibilities amongst themselves, helping to hone their business accruement.

Throughout the course, young people will also be given pointers on personal budgeting and money management, producing or improving a CV alongside setting out clear goals for the future once they have completed the course.

Councillor Andrew Harper, Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Families said:

“It’s important younger members of our community, who, for which ever reason, are not in full-time education of work, are able to learn a new skill which will hopefully set them in good stead for the future. This programme is the latest in a number being run by the council’s children’s service, which I’m sure, will prove just as successful and rewarding for all involved.”

The cookery course runs every Thursday and Friday between 12.30 - 3.30pm. For more information contact Canada Youth Villa on 0208 359 3530
