Council asks for healthy feedback

Barnet Council is asking residents for feedback on its draft Fit & Active Barnet (FAB) Framework, to create a more active and healthy borough.

Barnet residents, partners and local organisations are invited to read the draft framework which covers 2016 to 2021 and respond before the deadline of 13 November.

The feedback will help the council test its proposed vision and commitments, to encourage a collaborative approach to creating a more active and healthy borough.

The draft framework also involved working with partners in health, including housing associations, developers, and transport and other community providers.

While Barnet offers many opportunities for an active lifestyle, figures from Sport England’s Active People Survey indicate that at least 50 per cent of the borough’s adult population (aged 16 and over) do not currently take part in any sport or physical activity. Excess weight is another growing issue for the borough’s younger residents, as it can cause health problems in later life, according to Barnet’s Joint Strategic Needs Assessment.

Councillor Sachin Rajput, Chairman of the Adults and Safeguarding Committee, said: “We all know that being physically active can have a positive impact on our physical and mental health and our sense of wellbeing.

“Now we want to hear from our residents and anyone offering a physical activity opportunity such as sports clubs, schools or local community groups.

“By hearing back from as many people as possible, we’ll reflect the right priorities for Barnet - and together create a more active and healthy borough for everyone to enjoy.”
