It’s Mental Health Awareness Week and to mark the occasion, we’ve organised three free events.

There will be two mental health awareness talks as part of the Barnet Libraries Service’s Health and Wellbeing Month – the May theme of its wider Year of Learning. The first – by Jayne Abbott from the council’s Public Health team – will be at Chipping Barnet Library from 3-4pm on Friday (17 May). The second will be at Colindale Library from 3-4pm on Wednesday 22 May.

The Barnet Wellbeing Service will host a Body Confidence Wellbeing Day at the Meritage Centre in Hendon NW4 4JT from 11am-3pm on Friday 17 May. There will be free activities, information stalls and refreshments available throughout the event, which fits into this year’s ‘body image’ theme of Mental Health Awareness Week.

The activities will include:

  • Yoga from 11.30am-12noon.
  • Dance aerobics from 12noon.
  • A Building Confidence workshop, delivered by a drama therapist from 12.30pm.
  • Tai Chi from 1.15pm.
  • Hand massage complementary therapy throughout the day.
  • Art exercises throughout the day.

There will also be music performances from a pianist, laughter yoga, and the popular Wellbeing Café, providing information and the chance to sign-up to become part of activity groups.

The Barnet Libraries Service is taking part in the Reading Well project, where people can borrow books on a range of mental health conditions (all chosen by health professionals). Residents can also pick up a range of mood-boosting books from our libraries – there’s something for everyone, so you’re guaranteed to find something that will make you feel happy.
