Residents can now access thousands of newspapers and magazines from around the world for free at the touch of a button using just their library card.

The ‘Pressreader’ app is available to all registered library users and allows people to use a computer, tablet or smart phone to access publications from 100 countries and in 60 different languages free of charge. All residents need to log into the new app is their Barnet library card number.

Among its 7,000 publications are UK newspapers including The Guardian, Daily Mail, Independent and the Daily Telegraph.

There is also an extensive range of magazines ranging from the latest edition of Vogue and Empire magazine, to Newsweek, Gardeners’ World Magazine and this week’s TV Times.

For those keen to catch up on in-depth news overseas, Pressreader includes publications like the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, El Pais and Le Figaro.

Alongside Pressreader, residents can benefit from a range of other online resources already on offer in addition to traditional services in Barnet libraries.

These include ‘Borrowbox’, an app which allows people to listen to an extensive catalogue of audio books for free, and ‘RBdigital’, an app offering a broad choice of popular magazines.

Councillor Reuben Thompstone, Chairman of the Community Leadership and Libraries Committee, said: “I’m delighted that we are able to offer Pressreader to our residents. It is a fantastic online resource, giving people free access to thousands of publications from around the world with just a library card, and really complements the other digital services we already have on offer.”
