The borough won praise at the Good Food For London Awards 2018 for its work on sugar reduction, quality of food available for all residents, food security and healthy eating and healthy cooking education in schools.

Councillor Caroline Stock, Chairman of Barnet Council’s Health & Wellbeing Board, said: “We are delighted to have earned this recognition for our hard work in the last year.

“We have promoted the uptake of Healthy Start vouchers for pregnant woman and the mothers of children aged under four who are on low incomes. We have created a network and strategic vision for healthy food in Barnet – with private, public and third sector organisations coming together to help our residents improve their lifestyles. Barnet is now more informed and better connected across all areas of food and healthy weight.”

The award for ‘Most Improved’ council in London was presented to Cllr Stock at City Hall. It comes just days after two of Barnet’s High Streets – Whetstone and Temple Fortune – were named among the healthiest ten in London by the Royal Society for Public Health.

Cllr Stock said: “Our work to improve the health of our residents is continual and ongoing. This recognition shows that we are moving in the right direction. We will continue to do so until Barnet can be named one of London’s healthiest boroughs.”

The Good Food for London Awards are organised by London Food Link – which runs healthy living organisation Sustain's initiatives in London – and supported by the Mayor of London. You can find out more at: www.sustainweb.org/gffl/
