Provisional A-level results from 17 of the 20 Barnet schools with a sixth form show that students across the borough are once again set to be celebrating exam success.

Barnet’s results remain high this year even with the introduction of new linear A-levels, and the borough’s schools continue to exceed the national averages.

Results received so far in Barnet show 98.3% of A-level examinations were awarded an A* to E grade. This is above the national average of 97.9%. 83.2% achieved an A* to C (above the national average of 77.4%), 63.4% A* to B (above the national average of 53.1%) and 38.9% A* to A. The percentage awarded an A* to A is 12 percentage points higher than the national average (26.3%).

Among those receiving their results were pupils from Copthall School in Mill Hill.

Iqra Shahzad, 18, from Edgware, achieved an A*, two As and a B. She said: “I found out this morning on the UCAS website, I got in to UCL but I’m planning on taking a gap year and then going to study veterinary science at Surrey, specialising in working with larger animals. I’m really happy, the results were much better than I was expecting, it was worth going through all the tough times."

Zarghona Rasheed, 18, from Edgware, achieved the grades she needs for a place at the London School of Economics.

She said: “I was up to check my results online this morning and was there refreshing the page every minute. I’m so happy because I have got into LSE to study Economics and Economic History, I cried for five minutes after I found out. The exams were so hard and there is so much competition to get into LSE.”

Ami Patel, Director of the Sixth Form at Copthall School, said: “We’ve once again enjoyed scenes of elation and happiness as our students have achieved excellent post 16 results. Their success is testament to their hard work and commitment, and we’re very proud of them all and very excited to hear about their futures.”

Councillor Reuben Thompstone, Chairman of the Children, Education, Libraries and Safeguarding Committee, said: “It has been a tense wait over the summer for many students and I am delighted to see the excellent results from our schools.

“These results demonstrate just how much hard work our pupils put in, and are testament to the tremendous dedication of staff and the whole school community.

“I would like to wish all our A Level students every success in the future.”
