The speakers for the event will be a representative from the High Commission of the Republic of Rwanda, marking the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda, and Professor Tim Blackman from Middlesex University.

The Holocaust memorial theme for 2019 is ‘Torn from home’. The memorial service will be held at the Rickett Quadrangle, Middlesex University, in The Burroughs, Hendon, and will begin at 1pm, though attendees are asked to arrive and be seated by 12.45pm.

There will be music from the Barnet Band, the Youth Music Centre and the Alyth Youth Singers, as attendees commemorate victims of genocide across the globe. Snowdrop bulbs will be given out at the end of the ceremony as part of Barnet’s project to plant a snowdrop in memory of every one of the 1.5million children who died in the Holocaust.

The Worshipful Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Reuben Thompstone, said: “This very important annual commemoration reminds us all of the atrocities of the past, and the effect that genocide and the Holocaust has had on individuals and families, many of whom live in our borough. Whatever our differences, we are fortunate to live in a peaceful and democratic country – and it is important to reflect on this while we remember the horrors of the Holocaust and genocide across the globe.”
