Council makes green gains through revolutionary new fuel technology
Barnet has reduced its dangerous gas emissions by more than 100 tonnes in 14 months, through changing the fuel technology used by its fleet of 265 commercial vehicles.
The council was one of the first local authorities in the country to sign up to the ChemEcol Diesel Fuel Combustion Technology, also known as Additone EC-1500, in September 2005. Since then, another 15 councils have also introduced the technology.
Additone EC-1500 is added to the fuel and affects the combustion reaction to reduce the amount of fuel consumed and, in turn, the levels of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and PM10 particulates contained in emissions.
Barnet took the decision after reviewing its fuel consumption and emission levels and discovering the environmental and financial benefits of using the ChemEcol technology.
Barnet released figures this week that show between September 1, 2005 and November 29, 2006, there was a reduction of 36,875 litres in fuel consumed and a total of 102.06 metric tonnes fewer emissions of dangerous gases by the council’s fleet. The technology also saved the council £20,000 in fuel costs.
Councillor Matthew Offord, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "Vehicle emissions contain a number of dangerous gases and anything we can put in place to reduce the damage they do to the environment is welcome.
"This use of technology is an excellent initiative and we are constantly looking into more environmentally friendly ways to provide services."
