"1967 and All That" exhibition at Church Farmhouse Museum
The Mayor of the London Borough of Barnet, Cllr Eva Greenspan, will launch "1967 and All That" at Church Farmhouse Museum in Hendon on Thursday 1 February 2007.
The informative exhibition of press items covering lesbian and gay issues over the past 40 years is part of the UK-wide, Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transexual History Month and coincides with the 40th anniversary of the decriminalisation of male homosexuality. The event has been organised by volunteers from the Barnet LGBT Network, whose members represent a variety of organisations within the borough.
Councillor Brian Coleman, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement and Community Safety, said: "Gay men and women play an important role in community life in Barnet and this exhibition recognises the progress in equality issues over the last 40 years."
Robert Thompson, chair of the Lesbian and Gay Newsmedia Archives, which has loaned its extensive collection to the Barnet LGBT Network, commented: "The Wolfenden Committee had recommended that male homosexuality be decriminalised ten years previously, in 1957. '1967 and All That' shows how the press did not simply report on the progress of the Wolfenden recommendations, it actually helped to shape the debate."
The exhibition is open to the public from 3 February until 18 March 2007. Entry is free.
