Residents urged to walk the walk

Residents are invited to put on their walking boots and join Barnet's Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, Councillor Andrew Harper, as he walks the entire length of the Dollis Valley Green Walk next Friday (17 April).

Following last month's announcement that the area is set to receive £400,000 in funding from the Mayor of London Boris Johnson to finance improvements to the area, Councillor Harper will join members of the council's parks team in walking the 7 mile route stretching from Hendon to Totteridge, asking residents en route how they would like to see the money spent.

Starting at 9am in Brent Park, the walk will head north into Windsor Open Space through Mill Hill Viaduct and then onto Riverside Walk before finishing in Brook Farm Open Space at approximately 2pm.

The cash injection has been awarded under the Mayor of London's £1 million 'Help a London Park' scheme to improve the quality and safety of London's open spaces.

Barnet's entry competed against 46 other open spaces across the capital with the ten parks registering the greatest amount of votes receiving an upgrade.

In total, the Dollis Valley Green Walk received more than 4,000 votes of support from Londoners.

As part of the bid for funding the Council put forward a number of improvements but are now seeking to informally gauge the views of local residents on how the money should be spent to better improve their local open spaces along the walk. Improvements submitted as part of the funding bid included:

. Improved signposting and entrances to create safer walking routes

. Installation of new play facilities in Windsor Open Space, natural play facilities near Brent Park and new play equipment in Riverside Walk

. Landscaping work to make entrances more attractive and welcoming

. Introduction of new wildlife habitats

. Making walking routes more accessible for all, to increase the use of the area as a safe route for walking to shops, schools and public transport links.

Cabinet member for Environment and Transport, Councillor Andrew Harper said:

"Following the fantastic news that the Dollis Valley Green Walk has been awarded a substantial sum of money by Mayor Johnson, it is important we ask local residents and park users where they would like to see improvements made. I encourage residents who are able to attend the walk, to come down, put your ideas forward whilst enjoying some of the borough's best scenery."

Residents who are unable to attend the walk but would still like to put forward their ideas can do so by emailing: dollisvalleygreenwalk@barnet.gov.uk
