Disabled children aim high this half term

Children with disabilities in Barnet will get the chance to enjoy a range of fun filled short breaks this half term.

Dozens of children will benefit from a variety of tailor-made activities organised by Barnet Council together with its voluntary partners. The short breaks include a night away for under 11s and an adventure scheme for 9-19 year olds run by IPOP (Inclusive Play Opportunities) Other playschemes are being run by ‘Resources for Autism’ and Salaam[ Hendon Mosque.]

Children with more specific needs who may not be able to take part in one of the schemes will be able to benefit from a range of personalised packages, for example going to watch a football match or a family weekend away.

Barnet is one of a handful of authorities who have been awarded £30,000 additional funding from the Aiming High for Disabled Children programme as a result of its success in organising activities and playschemes for disabled children.

Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Andrew Harper said: “Barnet Council has a great track record of offering flexible, tailor-made activities and playschemes for children with special needs. These short breaks will make a difference to disabled children and their families in our borough by allowing them access to a leisure break of their choice.”

Susan Clydesdale-Cotter, Director of IPOP, said: “The children get the opportunity to build their self confidence on our adventure days by trying something exhilarating and different and we couldn’t do it without Barnet’s support. The children look so happy when they come back and this money will be able to provide them more priceless memories.”
