Rent Deposit Scheme ('Home Choice')
The Home Choice scheme used to be known as the Rent Deposit Scheme. The scheme is here to help you find a safe, attractive, privately rented property and to offer incentives to landlords and agents who rehouse you.
Home Choice information for landlords
If you are eligible, you will be able to choose the type of property and the area you want to live in. The Home Choice team works with local landlords and estate agents to find you a property. The homes will be checked to ensure they meet council standards and have all the proper safety certificates.
How to be referred to the scheme
Speak to a housing advisor by calling Barnet Homeseekers on 020 8359 4797 or by coming to Barnet House (see the address on the left hand side of the page). They will be able to refer you to the Home Choice team if you are eligible.
We may be able to assist you if you have been placed in temporary accommodation by us. If you are threatened with homelessness we may be able to help you if there is a duty on us, the council, to help you.
How the scheme works
You will be able to choose which location and type of property you want to live in. We will find you a property based on your preferences. You are also welcome to find your own property and tell us about it.
- If the property is in the borough we will pay 4 weeks rent in advance plus an incentive to the landlord.
- If the property is out of the borough of Barnet we will negotiate an appropriate incentive with the landlord.
The scheme is a great way to find a rented home of your choice.
How we ensure your safety
Landlords are required to provide us with documents such as:
- gas certificate
- energy efficiency certificate
- proof of ownership
We need these documents before we offer the properties to you. This is to ensure that certain standards are met and that the property is safe.
Once your tenancy has started
