Young people's drop-in activities
Barnet Youth Board
The Barnet Youth Board has been running since 2005 and looks at how services are being provided for young people across Barnet. The Youth Board makes sure that Barnet's young people's views and opinions are part of what is looked at and taken into account when the council makes decisions. It also works on its own projects.
Why is a youth board needed?
The youth board ensures young people’s experiences and ideas are right at the heart of all the council does for young people. Young people have a right to have their views heard in each and every decision that will affect their lives.
Who are we?
- We are a group of 20 young people aged between 13 and 21, from all over Barnet.
- We are from a wide range of ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. Some of us are disabled; some have been in care; some of us are in school or college or training.
- But we all believe that it is our responsibility to find out what the youth in Barnet are thinking and wanting and to get those views straight to the decision makers in the council.
What do we do?
- We meet every two weeks on a Thursday between 5pm and 8pm in North Finchley.
- We have organised a youth festival in Barnet.
- We have put together anti-bullying surveys for young people and now we are telling people about the results.
- We have produced a DVD about young people and the police which gives information about your rights when stopped and searched.
- We get involved in recruiting new staff and training others in the council.
- We are consulted by the council about plans it has for services for young people.
- This year we are looking at activities for young people, anti-bullying awareness and workshops and the UK Youth Parliament.
- It’s not all work – we also eat pizza and go on outings.
So if you are determined to get young people's views heard and have some time to give, contact Jo Domingo on 020 8359 6085 or 07951 982 063 or email theyouthboard@barnet.gov.uk and we’ll get in touch with you.
