Children and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS)

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) helps children, adolescents and their families who are experiencing a range of emotional and mental health problems. This includes:

  • bereavement
  • abuse
  • divorce
  • difficulties resulting from family breakdown
  • depression
  • anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, early onset of psychosis
  • self-harming behaviour
  • difficulties arising from conditions such as autism, aspergers and learning disability
  • behavioural problems, for example, ADHD

Types of help we offer

  • support for parents
  • individual therapy or play sessions to help the child understand his/her feeling
  • family therapy
  • a place in a group for parents or children
  • providing medication prescribed by a child psychiatrist
  • supporting other professionals about how best to help the child

Our team is made up of a number of different professionals who are able to provide a range of treatments depending on the problem. Specialist services are available for very young children, adolescents and those with learning difficulties.

How to get a referral for your child

While parents cannot refer children directly to the CAMHS team, referrals can be made by your child’s social worker, your child’s school or via your GP.

CAMHS is based at Edgware Hospital and Oak Lane Health Centre.
