Settlement checking service

  • Births, deaths, marriages and nationality

The settlement checking service is a partnership between UK Visas and Immigration and Barnet Register Office.

You can only use the settlement checking service if:

  • you are applying on form SET (M) for settlement in the UK as the husband, wife, civil partner, unmarried or same-sex partner of a British citizen or someone who is settled here

You cannot use the settlement checking service if:

  • you are a European Economic Area (EEA) National

Our trained officers will:

  • check you have completed your SET(M) form correctly
  • check you have paid the correct application fee
  • copy and return your valuable documents
  • ensure your application is valid and post it to UK Visas and Immigration

Why use the Settlement Checking Service

We will check that your application is complete and you have paid the correct fee. The service will allow for important and valuable documents, such as your spouse's or partner's passport, marriage and birth certificates to remain in your safekeeping. Your application form and copies of supporting documentation will be despatched to the Home Office via secure mail.

The service will help you get your application correct first time and avoid unnecessary delays. The Home Office has found that the settlement checking service is generally faster than the normal postal application process.
