Settlement checking service

  • Births, deaths, marriages and nationality

The settlement checking service is a partnership between UK Visas and Immigration and Barnet Register Office.

You can only use the settlement checking service if:

  • you are applying on form SET (M) for settlement in the UK as the husband, wife, civil partner, unmarried or same-sex partner of a British citizen or someone who is settled here

You cannot use the settlement checking service if:

  • you are a European Economic Area (EEA) National

Our trained officers will:

  • check you have completed your SET(M) form correctly
  • check you have paid the correct application fee
  • copy and return your valuable documents
  • ensure your application is valid and post it to UK Visas and Immigration

Why use the Settlement Checking Service

We will check that your application is complete and you have paid the correct fee. The service will allow for important and valuable documents, such as your spouse's or partner's passport, marriage and birth certificates to remain in your safekeeping. Your application form and copies of supporting documentation will be despatched to the Home Office via secure mail.

The service will help you get your application correct first time and avoid unnecessary delays. The Home Office has found that the settlement checking service is generally faster than the normal postal application process.

The service operates on an appointment-only basis. Appointments are available Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm at:

  • Hendon Town Hall, The Burroughs, London, NW4 4BG

To make an appointment, contact us on 020 8359 6400. You should contact us with enough time to book an appointment before your current leave to remain expires. Please note that you will not be able to attend an appointment more than 28 days before the end of your two year probationary period.

Please note:

  • your spouse/partner must attend your appointment with you
  • if you have dependant children under 18 years of age,  they do not have to attend
  • you will be charged a non-refundable administrative fee to reflect the cost of providing the service. This is in addition to the SET (M) application fee charged by the Home Office

You can reschedule your appointment. This must be done 48 hours in advance or you will be required to pay again. If you need to cancel your appointment this must be done seven days before your appointment. If the appointment is not cancelled seven days in advance, the fee you have paid will not be refunded.

When you telephone to book an appointment, we will tell you what to bring with you. Instructions explaining which documents you will need to bring are in the  SET (M) application form and guidance notes.
