Changes to birth, death, marriage or civil partnership registrations
Once a registration has been completed it becomes a legal document. It is extremely difficult to change any information on the original registration unless you can produce evidence that a mistake was made.
We will need to refer most requests for changes to the General Register Office for consideration, in this case there is a fee of £90 and can take a minimum of 1 month to get the approval. We can advise what type of documentary evidence you'll need for a correction to be authorised.
Any correction that can be actioned at the Register Office without being sent to the General Register office for approval the fee is £75.
A registration is not a document of current identity and is a purely historic document that records the information that was correct at the time it was signed. This means that if you want to change your name later in life it will not be possible to amend your birth certificate to record your current name.
You can change the forenames of a child within 12 months of the registration. You will need to fill out a form 14 (space 17) provided from the register office and pay the fee of £40.
