Disabled children's activities (short breaks)

  • Children, young people and families

Children, young people and their families who live in Barnet can find out what short break services are available listed in the short breaks directory.

The directory includes a list of providers that have met our quality threshold. You can view what each organisation has on offer to help you decide which activity will be most suited to your child’s needs.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for a short break service, children and young people must be aged 0 - 18, in receipt of a Statement of Special Education Needs (SEN) or Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) and be in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) at the middle or high rate.

They must also fall under one of the following categories:

Category A
Children and young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). They are likely to have other impairments such as Severe Learning Disabilities or behaviours which challenge. Children in this group will display behaviour which challenges services or behaviour which causes injury to themselves or others. Not all children with ASD will require specialist additional short break services.

Category B
Children and young people with complex health needs including those with disability and life limiting conditions and/or those with associated impairments such as cognitive or sensory impairments. These children may have moving and handling needs and/or require specialist equipment.

How to apply

The Short Breaks Directory gives details of all services that are currently available from 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018. You may request services for the whole year if you wish on one application.

Please state clearly what service you are requesting and for which date(s).

We shall consider all applications received by the closing date and will then contact you to let you know what services we are able to offer your child.

Decisions regarding Short Break services offered will take account of the quality and value for money provided to the Council.

All services are subject to availability.
