Disabled children's activities (short breaks)

  • Children, young people and families

Short Breaks are a range of play and leisure services for disabled children and young people aged 0 - 18 who live in Barnet. These services are targeted at children and young people who need additional support in order to access play and leisure services. A full list of what short break services are available can be found in the short breaks directory.

The directory includes a list of providers that have met our quality threshold. You can view what each organisation has on offer to help you decide which activity will be most suited to your child’s needs.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for a short break service, children and young people must be aged 0 - 18, be in receipt of an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) and be in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) at the middle or high rate.
They must also fall under one of the following categories:

Group A
Children and young people with Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC). They are likely to have other impairments such as Severe Learning Disabilities or behaviors which challenge. Children in this group will display behavior which challenges services or behavior which causes injury to themselves or others. Not all children with ASC will require specialist additional short break services.

Group B
Children and young people with complex health needs including those with disability and life limiting conditions and those with associated impairments such as cognitive or sensory impairments. These children may have moving and handling needs and/or require specialist trained staff and specialist equipment.

In exceptional circumstances, applications for Short Breaks that fall outside of these criteria may be considered at the Disability Resource Panel (DPR).
