Data protection

The Children’s Act 1998 provides a comprehensive framework for the care and protection of children and places a duty on councils to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. We are guided by the Children’s Act 1989 and the Children’s Act 2004, the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005 and the Human Rights Act (HRA) 1998.

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), and the Children’s & Young People’s Well-being Service are a team of mental health professionals. We offer early intervention to children and young people experiencing difficulties with their emotional well-being and mental health. We accept referrals from professionals such as teachers, but ask that the family agrees to any referral being made. This is so that the family can fully engage with our service and understand what we offer and how we can best help.

We usually only work with the family with their positive engagement and discuss all potential referrals with the family first. However, if the safety and well-being of the child is at risk and the situation meets safeguarding criteria, we will share information with other organisations like the police, to protect the child.

As we are working with families and children that may be experiencing problems, we look at each case individually and work with a wide range of information depending on the family history. This can include, where relevant, information about health, criminal prosecutions and finances. We only ask for information where it has an impact on the family and the child, and the help that we can offer.

We also offer consultation and training to professionals.

We publish anonymised outcomes and statistics to the NHS and publish these for the public.
