Fostering, adopting and looked after children

  • Children, young people and families

We aim to work with families so that they can care for their children at home, wherever possible.

However, sometimes children aren't able to live at home with their families or with other family members, so we provide care for them through foster carers or adoptive families. For very few children, who can't cope with a family environment, a children's residential home is the best option.

Barnet works to ensure that all children achieve their potential in terms of the five outcomes identified within the Every Child Matters document and the Children Act 2004, we want:

  • our children to be physically and emotionally healthy
  • to keep them safe from harm and protected from abuse
  • them to do well at school and to enjoy their free time
  • want to help them make choices and grow up into responsible members of society
  • to help them become young adults who are financially secure.

You can access the following services through Barnet’s safeguarding and social care:

  • children in care
  • Onwards & Upwards (service for young people leaving care)
  • fostering
  • adoption
  • two children’s homes
  • corporate parenting
  • Barnado's Advocacy Service (which provides independent advocacy)
  • The Placements Team: commissions placements for children other than those provided by Barnet.

Onwards & Upwards

Supports young people in care and those who have left care from the age of 16 until age 21, and up until age 25 while they are in full-time education. As a young person you can access this support whether you live in Barnet, other London boroughs or outside of London.

You can arrange to meet with Barnet's Onwards & Upwards Team at the multi-agency Young People’s Centre at 34-36 Woodhouse Road, North Finchley or at other venues depending on your individual circumstances. There is an out-of-hours telephone advice service you can call during weekday evenings, over the weekend and during bank holidays.

Our Pledge

‘Our Pledge for Children in Care and Care Leavers' outlines what we as Corporate Parents seek to deliver as a minimum for the children and young people who we are responsible for. If you are in care or leaving care and feel that we are not delivering for you on our Pledge then let us know at haveyoursay@barnet.gov.uk.

You can also use our new app, Mind of My Own (MOMO),  to tell us how you feel.  MOMO is free to download through the Apple app store or on Android through Google Play.

You can also use MOMO through a web browser at www.mindofmyown.org.uk. Create a MyMOMO account and get communicating with professional such as social workers, IRO’s, advocates, Youth Offending Team staff and family support workers at a time of your choosing.
