Common assessment framework in Barnet

  • Children, young people and families

About the Common Assessment Framework (CAF)

If your child needs help and support from the council, the easiest way to manage this is through the Common Assessment Framework or CAF.

The CAF is a simple way of gathering and sharing information about your child. Keeping this information in one place means you don't have to keep repeating your story to lots of different professionals.

It involves listening to you and your child to find out about your child’s needs and also what's working well in your child’s life. We want to ensure strengths can be built on and difficulties can be addressed.

The CAF:

  • helps everyone work together and puts your family at the heart of decisions made about your child
  • is completely voluntary, so the child, young person and parent/carer must agree for the process to take place and who else they want the assessment to be shared with

Further information about the CAF is given in our information leaflet.

The CAF is not intended to replace or delay specialist social work assessments or any concerns regarding children who may be at risk of abuse or neglect. If you think that a child may be at risk, then contact the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) using the details on the right.
