- Council and democracy
Barnet residents can get involved in the local democratic process:
- contact your local councillors
- attend committee meetings
- ask a question or making a comment at a public meeting
- start or sign a petition
- get involved with your local resident forum
- get involved with planning matters
- get involved in a consultation
Listen to the webcast many of our meetings live (audio only). The recorded discussion is then available on the meeting page to listen back to for up to six months. All meetings start at 7pm unless stated otherwise.
Ask a question/make a comment
For most committee meetings a maximum period of 30 minutes is allowed for public questions and comments.
Members of the public can submit questions or make a 3-minute timed comment which relate to an agenda item on a committee meeting agenda. Agendas are published on the fifth clear working day before a meeting.
To submit a question, or request to make a comment, find the relevant meeting you are interested in and contact the named officer. Please note that requests must be submitted by 10am on the third working day before a meeting.
If you submit a question, you will receive a written response - which will be published on the relevant web page for the meeting - before the meeting takes place. You will then, if you wish, be entitled to ask a supplementary question at the meeting.
Members of the public can use the council's online petition facility to create and/or sign petitions relating to the local area or functions of the council. Hard copy petitions can also be submitted to the Governance Service.
Please note that petition signatures must be from Barnet residents otherwise they will not count towards the overall signature total. Petitions signatories must provide addresses to enable them to be verified.
Petitions must have a minimum of 25 signatures and be relevant to the functions of the authority. View the council’s public participation and engagement rules.
Residents can raise issues and local matters, except for planning or licensing matters, through the following Residents' Forums:
Please visit the relevant page for your forum above to submit an issue.
You can check which forum is right for you by visiting WriteToThem.
There are three 'Area Planning Committees', one for each constituency in Barnet. These committees have a reporting line into their parent committee, the Planning Committee. The Area Planning Committees work of the determining planning applications within their respective areas that relateto town and country planning and development control, including tree and hedgerow protection.
You can see what items are due to be discussed by your local Area Planning Committee by visiting the committee page of the website - please note that agendas are published on the fifth clear working day before the meeting.
Requests to make comments are handled by the council's Planning Team (020 8359 3000). Find out how to view or comment on a planning application.
